Digital marketing terms translated into practical decisions.

This glossary defines the language used across SEO, paid media, local search, websites, analytics and conversion work. Each term includes the formal idea and the practical caution that prevents a metric or acronym from being mistaken for a business outcome.

Content earns its place by answering a real question, supporting a decision or moving a customer journey forward.

118 defined terms

Use the definition. Keep the commercial context.

This structured reference spans SEO, paid media, social media, content, email, analytics, martech, local search, ecommerce and conversion. Terminology changes across platforms, so definitions should be confirmed before reports or targets are compared.

118 of 118 terms shown

A

A/B testing

A controlled experiment comparing variants to estimate how a specific change affects a defined outcome.

In practice: Choose one primary decision metric, protect sample quality and avoid declaring a winner before the test design supports the conclusion.

Ad auction

The platform process that determines whether an advertisement is eligible to appear, where it appears and what the advertiser may pay.

In practice: Auctions consider more than a bid; relevance, predicted response, quality, competition and platform rules can influence delivery.

Ad creative

The visual, video, audio, headline, body copy and call-to-action material presented in an advertisement.

In practice: Creative should qualify the audience, communicate the offer and match the destination rather than optimise only for cheap attention.

Ad group

A Google Ads organisational level grouping related targeting, advertisements and settings inside a campaign.

In practice: Keep themes coherent enough that queries, ads and landing pages can share a precise message.

Ad rank

Google Ads' auction-time calculation used to determine ad eligibility and position using bid, quality and contextual factors.

In practice: A higher bid alone does not guarantee stronger placement; improve relevance, assets and destination quality alongside bidding.

Affiliate marketing

A performance arrangement where a publisher or partner earns compensation for attributed referrals, leads or sales.

In practice: Define attribution, commission, prohibited promotion, disclosure, refunds and fraud controls before launch.

Algorithm update

A change to the systems a platform uses to retrieve, rank, recommend, moderate or distribute content and advertising.

In practice: Diagnose changes with dates, affected pages and several evidence sources rather than assuming every fluctuation is an update.

Analytics

The collection, organisation and interpretation of behavioural, campaign and business data for decision-making.

In practice: Analytics becomes useful only when events, identity, consent, attribution limits and business definitions are understood.

Answer engine optimisation(AEO)

Making accurate, well-structured answers and entities easier for search and answer systems to understand and cite.

In practice: Lead with a direct answer, support it with evidence and context, and keep the complete page useful to people.

Attribution

A rule or model used to assign credit for a conversion across marketing interactions.

In practice: Attribution is an interpretation of available signals, not a perfect reconstruction of every influence.

Audience segmentation

Dividing a market into meaningful groups using needs, behaviour, lifecycle, value, geography or other relevant attributes.

In practice: A segment should change the message, offer, channel or experience; a label that changes no decision adds little value.

B

Backlink

A hyperlink from an external website to another website or page.

In practice: Evaluate editorial relevance, placement, legitimacy and audience value instead of treating every link as equal.

Bid strategy

The rules or automated system used to set advertising bids toward clicks, conversions, value, visibility or another objective.

In practice: Match the strategy to reliable conversion signals, economic constraints, data volume and campaign learning stage.

Bounce rate

A behaviour metric whose definition depends on the analytics product and configuration.

In practice: Do not diagnose a page from bounce rate alone; examine intent, engagement, events and the job of the page.

Brand awareness

The extent to which a relevant audience recognises or recalls a brand and associates it with a category or need.

In practice: Use several signals such as qualified reach, branded demand and recall research rather than impressions alone.

Brand positioning

The deliberate place a brand aims to occupy in a customer's mind relative to alternatives.

In practice: Effective positioning identifies the audience, problem, category, differentiator, proof and reason to choose.

Broad match

A Google Ads keyword match type that can match searches related to the keyword's meaning beyond exact wording.

In practice: Use with clear conversion signals, search-term review, negatives and budget controls because reach can expand quickly.

Buyer persona

A research-informed representation of a meaningful customer type, including goals, constraints, questions and buying behaviour.

In practice: Build personas from interviews, sales evidence and observed behaviour; fictional demographics alone do not improve marketing.

C

Call to action(CTA)

A prompt that tells a visitor what useful step to take next.

In practice: A strong CTA is specific, visible and appropriate to the visitor's decision stage.

Campaign

A coordinated set of marketing activities organised around an audience, objective, offer, message, period and measurement plan.

In practice: Define the business objective and channel role before selecting formats, budgets or platform settings.

Canonical URL

The preferred URL represented by a canonical link signal when similar or duplicate versions exist.

In practice: Canonicals help consolidate signals but are hints, so internal links, redirects and sitemaps should remain consistent.

Click-through rate(CTR)

Clicks divided by impressions, normally expressed as a percentage.

In practice: CTR helps diagnose message and placement response but does not establish lead quality or profitability.

Content cluster

A group of related pages organised around a broader subject, distinct search tasks and intentional internal links.

In practice: Give each page a unique purpose and connect supporting questions to the strongest relevant commercial or pillar page.

Content gap

A useful audience question, decision stage, entity or query intent existing content does not adequately address.

In practice: A competitor keyword is not automatically a gap; create content only when it serves the audience and site strategy.

Content marketing

Planning and distributing useful content to support audience understanding, trust and action.

In practice: Content should answer a real question or decision rather than exist only to repeat keywords.

Conversion

A defined action that represents meaningful progress in a customer journey.

In practice: State whether the conversion is a sale, qualified lead, booking, call or supporting event.

Conversion API(CAPI)

A server-to-server method for sending eligible event data to an advertising platform under configured privacy rules.

In practice: Plan deduplication, identifiers, event definitions, consent and data minimisation before treating server events as reliable.

Conversion rate

The number of defined conversions divided by eligible opportunities, usually sessions, users or clicks.

In practice: Use consistent denominators and evaluate conversion quality before celebrating an increase.

Conversion rate optimisation(CRO)

A structured process for improving how qualified visitors complete meaningful actions.

In practice: CRO combines research, messaging, UX, analytics, implementation and experiments where appropriate.

Cookie

A small browser-stored value used for sessions, preferences, measurement or advertising.

In practice: Classify purpose, duration and provider, collect consent where required and avoid assuming cookies identify a complete person.

Cost per acquisition(CPA)

Advertising cost divided by the number of defined acquisitions or conversions.

In practice: The definition of acquisition must be visible; a platform lead is not automatically a new customer.

Cost per click(CPC)

Advertising spend divided by recorded clicks.

In practice: A cheaper click is only useful when the traffic remains relevant and contributes to qualified outcomes.

Cost per lead(CPL)

Marketing or advertising cost divided by the number of recorded leads under an agreed definition.

In practice: Review qualification, duplicate rate, contactability and sales outcomes before treating a lower CPL as improvement.

Cost per mille(CPM)

Advertising cost per one thousand impressions.

In practice: CPM explains delivery economics, not whether the audience understood or acted.

Crawl budget

A practical description of how search systems allocate crawling attention across URLs on a website.

In practice: It matters most on large or changing sites; first control duplicate URLs, errors, internal discovery and server reliability.

Crawling

The automated discovery and retrieval of URLs and resources by a search engine or other bot.

In practice: A crawlable URL is not necessarily indexed, canonical or useful; review the complete discovery-to-ranking path.

Customer acquisition cost(CAC)

The eligible sales and marketing cost required to acquire a new customer over a defined period.

In practice: Document which costs and customers are included and compare CAC with gross margin, payback and lifetime value.

Customer data platform(CDP)

Software designed to unify eligible customer data from multiple sources into governed profiles and audiences.

In practice: A CDP does not repair poor consent, identity, taxonomy or source data; establish governance before activation.

Customer lifetime value(CLV)

An estimate of the value or contribution a customer generates across the relationship with a business.

In practice: State whether the model uses revenue, gross margin or profit and account for retention, discounting and uncertainty.

Customer relationship management(CRM)

A system and operating process for managing prospect and customer records, interactions, stages and follow-up.

In practice: Consistent lifecycle definitions and data entry matter more than the number of fields or dashboards.

D

Demand generation

Marketing that develops category awareness, problem understanding and future preference before immediate buying intent exists.

In practice: Connect reach and education to later branded search, engaged audiences, pipeline and revenue rather than last-click leads alone.

Digital PR

Earning editorial attention, mentions and links through newsworthy data, expertise, stories and relationships.

In practice: Prioritise relevance, credibility and audience value; placement volume without context creates little authority.

Display advertising

Visual advertising delivered across eligible websites, apps and platform inventory.

In practice: Control audience, placements, frequency, exclusions, creative and measurement because broad delivery can create misleading scale.

Duplicate content

Substantially similar content accessible through multiple URLs within or across websites.

In practice: Not every duplicate is a penalty; align canonicals, redirects, internal links and unique page purpose to reduce ambiguity.

E

E-E-A-T

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness: concepts used in Google's quality evaluation guidance.

In practice: Demonstrate real authorship, accurate sourcing, transparent business information and first-hand value instead of empty badges.

Email deliverability

The ability of legitimate email to reach intended inboxes rather than being rejected, filtered or routed to spam.

In practice: Protect permission, authentication, list quality, complaint rates, sending consistency and useful content.

Email marketing

Permission-based communication through email to educate, nurture, retain or convert an audience.

In practice: Segment by lifecycle and behaviour, set expectations, provide an unsubscribe route and measure downstream value.

Engagement rate

A platform-specific ratio comparing defined interactions with reach, impressions, followers or sessions.

In practice: Always state the formula; engagement can show response but not necessarily buying intent or commercial value.

Entity SEO

Optimising how clearly a website represents real people, organisations, services, places, products and their relationships.

In practice: Use consistent facts, descriptive content, internal connections and supported structured data rather than unnatural repetition.

Event

A recorded interaction or occurrence in an analytics or advertising measurement system.

In practice: Define the trigger, parameters, user state, deduplication and commercial meaning before marking an event as a conversion.

Exact match

A Google Ads keyword match type intended to match searches with the same meaning or intent under platform rules.

In practice: Exact match is not literal-only; continue reviewing actual search terms and negative keyword needs.

F

First-party data

Data a business collects directly through its own eligible customer and audience relationships.

In practice: Collect only what has a clear purpose, lawful basis, access control and retention policy.

Frequency

The average number of times an advertisement was delivered to a person or account under platform estimation.

In practice: Interpret with reach, period, audience size, creative fatigue, buying cycle and platform identity limitations.

G

Generative engine optimisation(GEO)

Work intended to make useful, accurate brand and subject information understandable and citable in generative search.

In practice: Build original evidence, clear entities, answerable passages and source quality; no markup guarantees an AI citation.

Geotargeting

Restricting or adjusting marketing delivery using eligible location signals and settings.

In practice: Review whether a platform uses presence, interest or both, and remember location inference can be imperfect.

Google Analytics 4(GA4)

Google's event-based analytics product for measuring eligible website and app interactions.

In practice: Configure meaningful events, consent, internal traffic, cross-domain journeys and reporting definitions before trusting totals.

Google Business Profile(GBP)

Google's business listing system used to manage eligible local business information across Search and Maps.

In practice: Keep categories, services, hours, address or service area, images and website connections accurate.

Explore the topic
Google Search Console(GSC)

Google's service for monitoring search performance, indexing information and website issues.

In practice: Search Console reports query and page signals, not complete analytics, leads or revenue.

Google Tag Manager(GTM)

A tag management system used to deploy and govern eligible measurement and marketing tags.

In practice: Use preview, versioning, naming, permissions and acceptance tests; a published tag is not automatically correct.

H

Hashtag

A labelled phrase used on social platforms to classify, discover or participate in content conversations.

In practice: Use relevant, readable hashtags where the audience uses them; volume does not replace a strong content idea.

Hreflang

HTML or HTTP annotations indicating language and regional alternatives of substantially equivalent pages.

In practice: Use valid reciprocal clusters, correct codes and self-references, and keep canonicals aligned within each language version.

I

Impression

A recorded opportunity for content, a search result or an advertisement to be displayed under the platform's rules.

In practice: Impressions indicate visibility or delivery scale; they do not prove attention or business impact.

Inbound marketing

Attracting and nurturing audiences through useful search, content, community and permission-based experiences.

In practice: Connect educational reach to clear next steps and commercial journeys instead of assuming traffic will convert itself.

Indexing

The processing and storage of eligible page information by a search engine for possible retrieval.

In practice: A crawled or indexed page is not guaranteed to rank for a particular query.

Internal link

A hyperlink between pages on the same website.

In practice: Use descriptive anchors and intentional placement to support discovery, hierarchy, context and useful reader journeys.

K

Key performance indicator(KPI)

A metric selected to indicate progress toward a defined objective.

In practice: A KPI needs an owner, formula, source, cadence, target context and decision it will influence.

Keyword

A word or phrase used in SEO or advertising research to represent query themes, targeting or demand.

In practice: Keywords are planning abstractions; optimise for the underlying task, page purpose and audience language.

Keyword cannibalisation

A situation where multiple URLs compete or confuse targeting for substantially similar intent.

In practice: Resolve it through intent mapping, consolidation, differentiation and consistent internal signals, not simply removing repeated words.

Keyword density

The percentage of words on a page represented by a particular keyword or phrase.

In practice: There is no universal ranking target; forced repetition reduces clarity and can become keyword stuffing.

Keyword difficulty(KD)

A third-party estimate of how competitive it may be to rank for a query, calculated differently by each tool.

In practice: Use as comparative research, then inspect intent, results, authority, content quality and business value directly.

Keyword research

Research into queries, language, demand, competition and intent associated with an audience's search behaviour.

In practice: Cluster queries by task and map them to a deliberate page architecture rather than one page per variation.

L

Landing page

The destination a visitor reaches from a campaign, search result or specific link.

In practice: It should continue the promise, provide necessary proof and make the next action clear.

Lead generation

The process of attracting, capturing and qualifying potential customer interest.

In practice: Define a qualified lead, required consent, response ownership and sales feedback before optimising form volume.

Lead magnet

A useful resource or incentive offered in exchange for eligible contact information or another action.

In practice: Make value specific and truthful, minimise requested data and connect follow-up to what the person requested.

Link equity

An informal SEO concept describing authority or ranking signals that may flow through hyperlinks.

In practice: Link value depends on relevance, page context, crawlability and search-system interpretation, not a fixed transferable score.

Local SEO

Search optimisation focused on relevant visibility for location-influenced queries and local business results.

In practice: Local SEO connects real business information, Google Business Profile, local pages, reputation and conversion routes.

Lookalike audience

A paid-media audience modelled from characteristics of an eligible source audience.

In practice: Source quality, privacy permissions, geography and event definitions influence usefulness; similarity does not guarantee intent.

M

Marketing automation

Rules and software used to trigger, personalise or coordinate marketing and lifecycle actions.

In practice: Automate a sound journey with clear ownership and exceptions; automation scales mistakes as efficiently as good process.

Marketing qualified lead(MQL)

A lead classified as meeting agreed marketing-stage criteria.

In practice: The criteria must be documented and reconciled with sales feedback; the label alone does not prove value.

Media buying

Planning, purchasing and optimising paid placements across advertising channels and inventory.

In practice: Connect targeting, creative, frequency, brand safety, cost and conversion quality rather than optimising media price alone.

Meta Ads

Paid advertising managed through Meta systems for eligible Facebook, Instagram and other placements.

In practice: Performance depends on audience context, creative, offer, destination, signals and business follow-up.

Explore the topic
Meta description

A page-level HTML description that search systems may use or rewrite when creating a search-result snippet.

In practice: Write a concise, accurate reason to click that matches the page; it does not guarantee ranking or displayed copy.

N

NAP consistency

Consistency of a local business's name, address and phone information across important listings and owned properties.

In practice: Prioritise accurate real-world data and major sources; minor formatting differences are not factual inconsistency.

Native advertising

Paid content designed to fit the format and experience of the surrounding platform or publisher.

In practice: Maintain clear advertising disclosure and judge the complete post-click journey, not only native engagement.

Negative keyword

A Google Ads targeting control used to prevent ads from matching specified search terms or meanings according to match rules.

In practice: Negative keywords protect relevance and budget but require search-term context and careful maintenance.

O

On-page SEO

Optimisation of page content, headings, metadata, entities, internal links, media and experience for a clear search task.

In practice: Make the answer and page purpose unmistakable without writing for an arbitrary keyword count.

Organic search

Unpaid search-result visibility selected by a search engine's retrieval and ranking systems.

In practice: Organic does not mean cost-free; strategy, content, development, authority and maintenance require investment.

Outbound marketing

Proactive distribution taking a message to an audience through advertising, outreach, events or direct contact.

In practice: Use precise targeting, permission and value; interruption without relevance can damage trust.

P

Page speed

The time and responsiveness characteristics of a page under specific device, network and interaction conditions.

In practice: Use field and laboratory evidence, prioritise user-visible bottlenecks and avoid sacrificing usability for a perfect score.

Pay per click(PPC)

An advertising pricing model in which clicks are a primary billable interaction.

In practice: PPC is broader than Google Search Ads and a click is an input, not the final commercial outcome.

Performance Max(PMax)

A Google Ads campaign type distributing ads across eligible Google inventory using assets, feeds, goals and automation.

In practice: Supply strong inputs, protect conversion definitions, review insights and separate brand strategy where appropriate.

Phrase match

A Google Ads keyword match type that can match searches containing the keyword's meaning under platform interpretation.

In practice: It is broader than literal phrase order; continue using search-term evidence and exclusions.

Pixel

A browser-based implementation used to record eligible events and support advertising measurement or audiences.

In practice: Validate triggers, consent, deduplication and data minimisation; a pixel cannot observe every customer journey.

Programmatic advertising

Automated buying and selling of digital advertising inventory using platforms, data and auction systems.

In practice: Control inventory quality, fraud, viewability, frequency, privacy, brand safety and outcome definitions.

Q

Quality Score

A Google Ads diagnostic estimate related to expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing-page experience.

In practice: Use it to investigate quality themes, not as the campaign's commercial objective or a direct auction-time score.

R

Remarketing

Re-engaging eligible audiences who previously interacted with a business, website, app or content.

In practice: Segment by useful behaviour, control frequency, respect consent and exclude people when continued advertising is inappropriate.

Retargeting

Paid distribution aimed at eligible people or accounts based on prior interactions or matched audience data.

In practice: Progress the decision with relevant proof or an offer rather than endlessly repeating the same advertisement.

Return on ad spend(ROAS)

Attributed revenue divided by advertising spend.

In practice: ROAS should be interpreted with margin, attribution, refunds, repeat value and operating costs.

Return on investment(ROI)

A ratio comparing net benefit with the cost of an investment under an agreed formula and period.

In practice: Show included costs, incremental value, timing and attribution; revenue divided by spend is ROAS, not complete ROI.

Robots.txt

A root-level file communicating crawl permissions and related directives to compliant bots.

In practice: Blocking crawling does not reliably remove an already known URL from search; use the correct indexation control.

S

Sales funnel

A simplified model of how potential customers progress from awareness through consideration, qualification and purchase.

In practice: Real journeys loop across channels; use stages for ownership without pretending every buyer follows one path.

Search engine optimisation(SEO)

Improving technical, content and authority systems so relevant pages can be discovered, understood and selected in organic search.

In practice: SEO should connect visibility to useful pages and measurable customer journeys.

Explore the topic
Search engine results page(SERP)

The interface a search engine returns for a query, including organic, local, paid and enriched result types.

In practice: Study result composition and intent before choosing content format, page type or advertising strategy.

Search intent

The task, question or decision a person is trying to complete with a query.

In practice: Map closely related intent to the strongest useful canonical page instead of creating one URL per wording.

Search term

The actual query associated with an advertising interaction or search-performance record.

In practice: Search terms reveal demand language and qualification patterns; they are not identical to advertiser keywords.

Social media marketing(SMM)

Using organic and paid social platforms to build attention, relationships, demand and measurable customer journeys.

In practice: Match platform behaviour, creative, community management and paid distribution to a clear audience and role.

Social proof

Evidence that other people or organisations have used, evaluated or trusted an offer.

In practice: Use attributable reviews, case evidence and credentials with permission; invented testimonials destroy trust.

Structured data

Machine-readable markup that describes visible page entities and relationships using an accepted vocabulary such as Schema.org.

In practice: Markup must match visible content and must not invent reviews, prices, services or credentials.

T

Technical SEO

Work on crawling, rendering, indexation, site architecture, templates and related technical signals.

In practice: Technical health supports visibility but does not replace useful content, relevance or authority.

Top-of-funnel(TOFU)

The awareness stage where an audience is learning about a problem, category or possibility.

In practice: Use broad education and memorable framing, then provide a relevant path to deeper consideration.

Topical authority

The perceived depth, consistency and credibility of a website or expert across a connected subject area.

In practice: Build complete intent coverage, original expertise, evidence and sensible internal relationships, not thin page volume.

Tracking pixel

A small browser-loaded resource or script used to record eligible views, interactions or conversions.

In practice: Document purpose, consent, identifiers and data recipients; blocked or missing pixels create measurement gaps.

U

User experience(UX)

The complete experience a person has while understanding and interacting with a product, service or interface.

In practice: Evaluate clarity, accessibility, speed, confidence, error recovery and task completion across real contexts.

User-generated content(UGC)

Content created by customers, community members or users rather than the brand itself.

In practice: Obtain permission, moderate risk, disclose paid creator relationships and preserve authentic context.

UTM parameters

Standard query parameters used to label campaign traffic for analytics reporting.

In practice: Use a consistent naming convention and never place personal or secret information in a campaign URL.

V

View-through conversion(VTC)

A conversion attributed after an eligible advertisement impression without a recorded click under platform rules.

In practice: Interpret with attribution windows, incrementality and cross-channel exposure; it does not prove causation.

W

Web analytics

Measurement and analysis of website acquisition, behaviour, technical context and defined outcomes.

In practice: Combine analytics with search, advertising, CRM and qualitative evidence while preserving privacy and definition limits.

Z

Zero-click search

A search where the user obtains an answer or completes a task without clicking to an external website.

In practice: Optimise for useful visibility and brand demand while identifying queries where a visit is necessary for the next step.
